Lady Eagles Rebound With 8-0 Win Over Owensville Dutchgirls

The Lady Eagles (8-3-2) bounced back with an 8-0 conference takedown over the Dutchgirls (4-9) on Tuesday, Apr. 9. With Sullivan’s veterans taking control of the game at the start and the ‘young guns’ firing away, they showed that their 5-0 Orchard Farm loss the night before was a fluke.

Head coach Matt Wiegers was proud of his squad’s rebound against Owensville, explaining, “In the Orchard Farm game, we were playing flat-footed and on our heels, and we reminded the girls that in order to be successful, you have to constantly be on your toes and win the 50-50 balls. The girls were able to get back to fundamental soccer and utilize their skill as a team to get back in the win column against Owensville.”

In the first four minutes, Ella Kirk got Sullivan’s momentum rolling by notching her second goal of the season, giving Sullivan an early 1-0 lead.

Then, after the referees called a handball foul on Owensville, Cambria Pohlman chipped in Sullivan’s second-game score.

A few minutes later, Tessa Newman was attacked by a Dutchgirl and returned it to Pohlman, who sent another strike into the net.

Sullivan’s fourth goal came when Gabbi Camacho tussled with a Dutchgirl for the ball, and as it rolled away, Lambert fired it in.

Right after Lambert received hugs from her teammates, Wiegers sent more JV players onto the field. One of them, Avaleigh Parks, kicked the ball up and let the wind propel it into the net right before the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Eagles retained ball possession to start the second half but waited for a sixth goal to pivot them back to their momentum. Ava Hayes came to the rescue 18 minutes in and broke the drought with a score.

Not long afterward, Hayli Venable launched the ball onto the goalpost, and it bounced off to roll into the net for her second season goal.

Then, as the game ticked into its final minutes, Wiegers placed more of Sullivan’s JV players onto the field. One of them, Camacho, seized her moment on the big stage. With 1:35 left on the scoreboard, she ended the shutout by mercy rule, scoring her first career goal and the match’s final.
